Georgetown-Scott County EMS is celebrating a groundbreaking moment in its history: Natalie Guerra’s promotion to become the department’s first female chief.
What began nine years ago as a part-time EMT role has evolved into a leadership milestone. Encouraged by a close friend to pursue emergency medical training, Guerra quickly rose through the ranks—from EMT to paramedic, then to captain—and now, assistant chief. She becomes the highest-ranking woman ever in the department in her new role.
“This is where I wanted to be, so it’s kind of surreal that this has happened,” Guerra shared.
Throughout her career, Guerra has embraced the unpredictable nature of emergency services, saying, “It’s never the same day twice in our industry and in our field. I love that aspect of it. I love making a difference and changing the lives around us.”
Now focusing on administrative responsibilities—such as hiring, scheduling, and disciplinary procedures—Guerra is stepping away from daily emergency calls. Still, she remains committed to making an impact behind the scenes and inspiring future generations.
“I want to be an example for others to look up to,” she said. “We’re seeing more women recognize their value in this field. Traditionally male-dominated, it’s exciting to see that shift—and I’m proud to be a part of it.”
Congratulations to Assistant Chief Natalie Guerra on this well-earned achievement and the powerful example she sets for others in emergency services and beyond.
